​SpaceX has been fighting a long battle for the right to be considered for a US military contract.  After suing for this right, they’re the last ones in the running for the contract of a next-gen GPS satellite for the U.S. Air Force. They are set to land their first US military contract.

As consultants dealing with different companies, there are always going to be a million hoops to jump through.  Each new client is a new company, new layout, new players, and a new set of rules.  Each business that hires you on is also going to have its own individual company bureaucracy.  So, how do you deal with company bureaucracy as a consultant?  Well, don’t fight the system on this one.

Working as a Consultant: "They" vs "We" in Talking to the Customer’s Customer

​In our last article, we shared the importance of distinguishing between “I” and “We” when consulting for a company.  When you’re speaking to your customer/client, you want to be sure to use “you”.  Why?  In a nutshell, it’s not your company, it’s not your business, and it’s not your end goal.  So, in those situations, it is important to say “you”.  “You” should be focused on this because, at the end of the day, “you” do need to do this stuff not “me”.  This is not my company, it is yours. Now that we’re wrapped up in pronouns, what about when you talk to the customer’s customer as a consultant?

Steps to Take After Every Meeting

We all come out of meetings with the best of intentions.  We’ve addressed whatever it is that we needed to address while in the meeting, and we’ve come up with solutions or tasks for each issue on our meeting list.  It seems sorted out, we’re hitting the ground running, and then life gets in the way.  Other meetings on different tasks are taking up space in our brain, new obligations are yanking at our attention, and more pertinent information needs addressing in the meantime.  The important tasks that we had leaving that first meeting get pushed on the back burner and somehow they fizzle out all together.  So, how do we prevent this?  Well, there are some necessary steps to take during and after every meeting to ensure that that doesn’t happen.
